The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game

Created by Monte Cook Games

The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game examines what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, a London-based organisation dedicated to researching esoteric and weird stories from everyday people. Individually, these stories—these "Statements"—are unsettling. Together they begin to form a picture that is truly horrifying because as you look into the depths of the archives, something starts to look back...

Latest Updates from Our Project:

The Magnus Archives Playmat is in production…and even more Magnus is coming!
about 1 year ago – Thu, Dec 19, 2024 at 11:08:38 AM

Hello, archivists!

Winter has arrived in here Kansas! Are you staying warm, deep within the archives? Is the darkness that shrouds you like a blanket keeping you—and whatever else lurks in there—warm? We hope so…and we hope that, no matter what you’re celebrating, you have a cozy December!

Speaking of the holidays: MCG’s 2024 Holiday Gift is here! ❄️ 🎁 ⛄

This is a tradition here at MCG: we give you a $10 coupon for the MCG Shop. Use it to get a little something for yourself or a loved one—or turn it into a donation to one of three charities we’re supporting this holiday season. We make the donation (100% goes to the charity) and you pay nothing!

We have deluxe corebooks!

The deluxe edition of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game reached our US warehouse recently. There were some unfortunate freight delays getting it to our UK and Australia warehouses, though, but those are now substantively resolved—so we hope to begin fulfillment of this beautiful book in the days to come. Look for an email from us soon!

The Magnus Archives Playmat has come to life!

We’ve received printer samples of the Magnus Archives Playmat from two different vendors and picked the strongest one (the one on top in the photo). It’s an oversized playmat like many we’ve done in the past, and it is currently in production. Because it’s coming from China, it won’t end up shipping until after Chinese New Year early next year, but we’re very excited to get this out to you! Thank you once again for helping us bring this handy tool to life.

A quick update about adventures
over 1 year ago – Fri, Nov 22, 2024 at 11:26:21 AM

Hello archivists,

The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game crowdfunding campaign was a phenomenal success, raising over $2M dollars and having 11,612 backers. We cannot thank you enough for bringing the books and supplements we’ve since made for the game to life.

We are human, however, and sometimes in the chaos of such a whirlwind campaign as this one, we miss things. It’s recently come to our attention that one of our stretch goals wasn’t fully realized. While we did expand the page count for the book which was promised for hitting the $1.4M stretch goal, the additional pages were filled with other additional content, not the new investigation that was promised as part of the stretch goal.

So: a new investigation for The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game is coming!

We’ll create and release a brand-new investigation to you, the backers of this campaign! We’re hoping to be able to deliver it as a PDF by late spring 2025. We deeply apologize for the oversight and hope you’re excited for the new content. As we work on getting this delayed reward to you, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.

Once again, we thank you for making this campaign truly special for everyone involved and for your ongoing patience as we work to rectify this mistake.

Thanks so much,
 Team MCG

The Limited Deluxe Editions Are Coming—Huzzah! (Plus other great info...)
over 1 year ago – Wed, Nov 20, 2024 at 03:45:51 PM

Hello, archivists,

The Limited Deluxe Editions (autographed and not autographed) of The Magnus Archive Roleplaying Game are on their way to our warehouses! We expect to be fulfilling these as soon as they arrive, so if you’re due for one of these gorgeous editions keep your eyes peeled for a fulfillment message.

If you need a reminder on how to redeem your rewards through the MCG Shop, check out this handy resource.

But what about your other archival resources?

The Magnus Archives Playmat, Campaign Journal, Institute Folders, and XP Deck have all been sent to press! We can’t wait to get these items into your hands, to aid in your journey of cataloguing and researching the paranormal.

Do not enter The Darkest Woods.

Here, the woods sing. Here, the squirrel leaps from branch to branch, and the stag lifts its antlered head before bounding away through dappled light.

 But go no further, friend.

Do not mistake the forest’s bounty for kindness. Do not think its shadowed depths are simply denser versions of these pleasant shallows. For to venture deeper is to become lost within the ancient chambers of the forest’s dark heart, where twisted and sinister things make their homes and even light struggles to find its way.

The Darkest Woods is a terrifying descent into horror built for the game you’re playing right now!

Whether you run it as a one-shot or play the full mega-adventure, you can drop The Darkest Woods into your current campaign. It takes just minutes to convert your PCs into the House System. No worldbuilding, no campaign planning, no new character generation. Just take your PCs into the Woods for an experience that will terrify your most battle-hardened players!

The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game corebook is in layout—want a sneak peek?
over 1 year ago – Fri, Aug 09, 2024 at 02:14:59 PM

Hello backers,

We’re incredibly excited to share this update with you—you just HAVE to see this! Get a preview of this corebook!

With the corebook manuscript completed, edited, and approved by the folks at Rusty Quill, the next step is layout. We’ve had loads of amazingly unnerving art sent to us recently, and the book is really starting to take form. These preview images aren’t final, but they sure are cool.

The player's guide and the corebook are in proofing and will be heading to the printer at the end of the month—we're excited and hope you are, too.

The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game, and the many other great items you funded through this campaign, are getting closer and closer to becoming realities. We’re looking forward to having this game in our hands—and getting it into yours, of course!

 Thanks again for your support,
 —Team MCG
