The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game

Created by Monte Cook Games

The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game examines what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, a London-based organisation dedicated to researching esoteric and weird stories from everyday people. Individually, these stories—these "Statements"—are unsettling. Together they begin to form a picture that is truly horrifying because as you look into the depths of the archives, something starts to look back...

A Look at Some Rules—Plus Monte Live Tonight!
almost 3 years ago – Thu, Sep 07, 2023 at 05:49:43 PM

We have a bunch of interesting stuff to share with you this evening—including a peek at the rules for The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game (specifically, some of the ways in which they differ from the standard Cypher System rules). But first:

Join Monte on Cypher Unlimited Tonight!

Monte will join the guys on Cypher Unlimited live, tonight! Come join the conversation, and ask your questions about the game, the process, or, well, anything else you’d like to ask Monte.

The event starts at 10:00 p.m. EDT (7:00 p.m. PDT), on the Cypher Unlimited Twitch channel.

If you can’t make the show, we also have an AMA up on the Cypher Unlimited Discord. Drop by and post your questions there!

A New Pledge Level!

We’ve had some requests for a PDF-only pledge level that includes all the PDFs offered by the campaign. So . . . we’ve done it! If you’re backing at the Intern level, you might be interested in an inexpensive upgrade to File Clerk. You’ll get (in addition to the corebook in PDF) all the PDF items currently available through the campaign, including the GM campaign journal, the character portfolios, and the Player’s Guide.

Even better, you get PDF stretch goals—and one’s already been unlocked!

A Look into the Rules

We’ve just posted an article to the MCG website that looks at some of the design work going into The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game. Take a look at how stress, damage, characters, and avatar abilities will function in the game. The article also touches on the role of statements in your game—but Monte has a much more detailed article on that subject coming soon!

Art Plates Added to the Deluxe—Now Let’s Upgrade the Standard!
almost 3 years ago – Fri, Sep 01, 2023 at 07:05:09 AM

This campaign continues to soar—thank you, backers, for your amazing support and your help spreading the word!

We’ve unlocked another stretch goal, and the Limited Deluxe Edition of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game will now get an upgrade, with roughly 8 pages of full-page art plates added to the book. Everyone getting the deluxe book—backers at the Archivist level and up—are getting a rewards upgrade as a result of this goal.

So now let’s upgrade everyone’s rewards!

Adventures in The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game are referred to as “investigations,” and every investigation is instigated by a statement. We’re already planning to include a couple of ready-to-play investigations in the corebook, but we think everyone would enjoy more. So, for our next stretch goal, let’s increase the investigations in the book, expanding the page count of both the standard and the Limited Deluxe Edition.

We’ll unlock this goal at $1,400,000. Every pledge level will benefit from this goal, so please help us shout it from the rooftops!

File Folders Unlocked! How About a Deluxe Upgrade?
almost 3 years ago – Wed, Aug 30, 2023 at 12:47:50 PM

Backers, you gave us such a wonderful and amazing launch day yesterday. And that excitement continues—our second day is on fire as well. So much so that we’ve unlocked another stretch goal!
The file folder set is now a reality! This set of a dozen file folders will be great as part of immersive props, or just to store your maps, handouts, and other documents that accumulate in a fun campaign. It’s now an add-on, and has been added to the rewards of all backers at the Entity pledge level.
We’re super excited about the Limited Deluxe Edition version of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game—it’s going to be beautiful. But could it be even better? We have a few ideas!

Let’s start by adding some art plates to the deluxe edition. We’ll reproduce some of the best art from the book in full-page format, really showing it off. This will increase the size of the book by about eight pages.

Everyone who is getting the Limited Deluxe Edition version of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game (every pledge level from Archivist on up) will see their rewards upgraded by this goal. We’ll unlock it at $1,200,000.

The 48-hour deadline for the Magnus Institute cassette is nearing! If you know anyone who hasn’t backed yet, tell them to get on board quickly to claim this exclusive reward!

XP Deck Unlocked! Let’s Make More Cool Things!
almost 3 years ago – Tue, Aug 29, 2023 at 07:41:12 PM

What an amazing campaign this has been so far—and we’re not even a full a day into it. Thank you so much for your support!

We’ve unlocked the XP Deck. Backers at the Avatar and Entity pledge levels now have this item added to their rewards automatically. Not at one of those levels? The XP Deck has also been made available as an add-on.

For our next reward, we were thinking about something roleplaying gamers and archives staff have in common: managing lots of paper! The GM Campaign Journal is great for keeping notes, adventure ideas, NPCs, and more well organized, and the Character Portfolios do the same thing for the sorts of info players accumulate. But over the course of an exciting campaign, both players and GMs also end up with handouts, maps, images of characters, creatures, and artefacts, and other items that make the game fun and immersive. How to organize all of that?
It so happens that the Magnus Institute also manages a fair bit of paper, so we’re taking our inspiration from that. We’d like to make a set of a dozen Magnus Institute file folders. Use them to manage game documents, or as an element of immersive props to support your adventures.

We’ll unlock the folder set at $950,000. It will be added to the Entity pledge level, and also be available as an add-on.

Remember
! Backers who pledge in the first 48 hours get a really cool Magnus Institute cassette tape with their pledge. The deadline is approaching quickly, so tell your friends: If you know anyone who hasn’t backed yet, they should get on board quickly to claim their exclusive cassette!

Thanks for your support!

What a Day! Let’s Talk Stretch Goals!
almost 3 years ago – Tue, Aug 29, 2023 at 01:33:38 PM

It’s been an incredible day—not that it’s in any way over! Your amazing support has kept our heads spinning ever since the launch. But now that we’ve caught our breath and gotten our feet back under us, it’s time to talk about stretch goals.

We want to start with an entirely new reward: An XP Deck.

In the Cypher System (the game engine for The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game), experience points (XP) are used to advance characters—but they can also be spent for in-game benefits, like rerolling a critical roll, prompting a player intrusion, and similar mechanics that let players influence the narrative. XP are handed out during play, most commonly when GM intrusions occur, and they can be traded between players as needed. A physical token to represent XP is handy at the game table. You can use literally anything, but cards are especially useful—portable, easy to tuck into your character portfolio, and handy at the table.

The Magnus Archives XP Deck will have 30 XP cards featuring some of the fantastic artwork from the RPG. It will be available as an add-on and added to the rewards for backers at the Avatar and Entity pledge levels!

We’ll unlock the XP Deck at $700,000.

Please continue spreading the word—we’re looking forward to unlocking this goal and hopefully many more over the course of this campaign. The more gamers hear about this campaign, the faster we’ll make that happen!

It’s been an amazing day so far—we really appreciate your enthusiastic support!
