The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game

Created by Monte Cook Games

The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game examines what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, a London-based organisation dedicated to researching esoteric and weird stories from everyday people. Individually, these stories—these "Statements"—are unsettling. Together they begin to form a picture that is truly horrifying because as you look into the depths of the archives, something starts to look back...

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Audio Assets Unlocked! Prop Set Is Next!
over 2 years ago – Wed, Sep 20, 2023 at 07:56:16 PM

Hello, backers! Things have really been heating up as we move through this final week of the campaign—and we have unlocked another stretch goal!

We’ll work with Alex, Jonny, and our other friends at Rusty Quill to produce a suite of audio assets to give your game an authentic The Magnus Archives feel. You’ll be able to download these files via a link that will be included in the corebook. Play them to provide specific sound effects, to hear descriptions of key items, locations, or creatures in the voices you know from the podcast, or to add background ambiance to your game.

Next Up: the Prop Set

We announced this in our last update, but it’s a very exciting stretch goal (and we have a lot of new backers), so let’s take another look:

That’s a prop set we made for Invisible Sun, another of our games. It contains old letters and pages torn from long-lost books, forms, business cards, invitations, menus, signs, handbills, posters, letterhead, brochures, postcards, train and theatre tickets, and more, all filled with mysteries, clues, and potential plot hooks.

Great props are so much fun to use at the game table and really bring the game to life. Imagine handing the players a Breekon and Hope bill of lading when they investigate that strange shipment mentioned in a recent statement. Or a business card found in the files of another case. These things give a sense of authenticity to your game and immerse the players in the creepy mystery of their investigations. We’d like to give you those props, and more, in a set very similar to the Invisible Sun props you see above.

The prop set will be available as an add-on and included in the rewards at the Entity pledge level. We’ll unlock it at $1,850,000.

(If Invisible Sun looks intriguing to you, check this out!)

Let’s Make This Happen!

Things have really heated up this week. We still have two days left—often two of the most exciting days of a campaign! Unlocking this goal is within reach, and it’s even possible we could reach more stretch goals—IF you help spread the word.

Share this campaign on the social media platforms of your choice. There are still thousands and thousands of gamers out there who haven’t heard about it—or don’t realize how cool this game is going to be.

Playmat Unlocked! Let’s Talk TWO Stretch Goals!
over 2 years ago – Mon, Sep 18, 2023 at 06:34:15 PM

Hello, backers! As we head into the exciting final days of this campaign, we’re excited to have unlocked yet another stretch goal:
The playmat for The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game has been unlocked! It’s now available as an add-on. Even better: It’s been added automagically to the Avatar and Entity pledge levels. These levels were a great deal to begin with, and are now even better—if you’re not backing at one of those levels, you might want to think about an upgrade!

What’s next? We normally announce our goals one at a time—but in his recent interview on Cypher Unlimited Live, Monte might have let slip about a goal we’d like to hit, so let’s talk about that one, too.

How Would You Like Some Audio?

Next up: audio assets. We’ll work with Alex, Jonny, and our other friends at Rusty Quill to produce a suite of audio assets that will give your game an authentic The Magnus Archives feel. Play these files to add some background ambiance, to provide specific sound effects, or even to hear descriptions of key items, locations, or creatures in the voices you know from the podcast.

These audio files will be made part of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game, via a link provided in the corebook—so every backer’s rewards get better. We’ll unlock them at $1,700,000.

And Some Really Cool Props!?

Have a look at this:

That’s a prop set we made for Invisible Sun, another of our games. That prop set contains invitations, tickets, playbills, old letters, menus, business cards, signs, handbills, posters, train and theatre tickets, letterhead, brochures, postcards, pages torn from long-lost books, and more, all filled with mysteries, clues, and hooks.

Few things draw players into a game, and make their eyes light up at the game table, like well-crafted props—and The Magnus Archives is a great setting for including them.

The prop set will be available as an add-on, and included in the rewards at the Entity pledge level. We’ll unlock it at $1,850,000.

(If Invisible Sun looks intriguing to you, check this out!)

Can We Do It?

Yes!

The final days of a campaign like this one are often some of the most exciting! Our crowdfunding campaign for the Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game received nearly $500,000 in pledges in the final four days, so it’s absolutely possible to unlock these goals—and maybe one or two more—before this campaign ends.

IF
you help spread the word. Share this campaign on the social media platforms of your choice. There are still thousands of thousands of gamers out there who haven’t heard about it—or don’t realize how cool this game is going to be.

New Investigations Unlocked! Let’s Make Another Item!
over 2 years ago – Mon, Sep 11, 2023 at 06:33:46 AM

We’ve unlocked yet another stretch goal, backers, adding new adventure content to The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game. This grows both the standard corebook and the Limited Deluxe Edition—making everyone’s rewards better!

Here’s what we have in mind for our next stretch goal:
In the Cypher System, players roll all the dice. And there aren’t a great many tables or charts a GM needs to reference during play. So many gaming groups prefer an alternative to the traditional GM screen, one that removes the barrier between GM and player.

The Magnus Archives playmat will be a beautiful centerpiece on your gaming table. And along the edges you’ll have reference info of interest to the GM and the players—things like stress sources, the damage track, and special roll result info; task difficulty and damage from hazards tables for the GM; and distance definitions, weapon damage info, and other things players and GMs sometimes look up during play. It’ll all be there in front of you so that you can focus on your story, not on flipping through the book.

The pleasant fabric surface with rubberized backing gives you a great die-rolling surface. It’s well-sized at 24″ x 32″, large enough to show off its art and information nicely, but not too big for your gaming table. And of course it will feature striking artwork from The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game.

It will be available as an add-on and added to the rewards for backers at the Avatar and Entity pledge levels! That's right: if you're backing at one of those levels, this will automagically be added to your rewards. And if you're not—time to start thinking about upgrading?

We’ll unlock the playmat at $1,550,000.

This has been a really exciting campaign, but there are still thousands of gamers out there who haven’t even heard of this campaign yet, or who don’t grok how cool an RPG of The Magnus Archives will be. Won’t you help spread the word a bit? The more we help them find this campaign, the faster we’ll hit stretch goals, and the more we’ll unlock!

A Look at Some Rules—Plus Monte Live Tonight!
over 2 years ago – Thu, Sep 07, 2023 at 05:49:43 PM

We have a bunch of interesting stuff to share with you this evening—including a peek at the rules for The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game (specifically, some of the ways in which they differ from the standard Cypher System rules). But first:

Join Monte on Cypher Unlimited Tonight!

Monte will join the guys on Cypher Unlimited live, tonight! Come join the conversation, and ask your questions about the game, the process, or, well, anything else you’d like to ask Monte.

The event starts at 10:00 p.m. EDT (7:00 p.m. PDT), on the Cypher Unlimited Twitch channel.

If you can’t make the show, we also have an AMA up on the Cypher Unlimited Discord. Drop by and post your questions there!

A New Pledge Level!

We’ve had some requests for a PDF-only pledge level that includes all the PDFs offered by the campaign. So . . . we’ve done it! If you’re backing at the Intern level, you might be interested in an inexpensive upgrade to File Clerk. You’ll get (in addition to the corebook in PDF) all the PDF items currently available through the campaign, including the GM campaign journal, the character portfolios, and the Player’s Guide.

Even better, you get PDF stretch goals—and one’s already been unlocked!

A Look into the Rules

We’ve just posted an article to the MCG website that looks at some of the design work going into The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game. Take a look at how stress, damage, characters, and avatar abilities will function in the game. The article also touches on the role of statements in your game—but Monte has a much more detailed article on that subject coming soon!

Art Plates Added to the Deluxe—Now Let’s Upgrade the Standard!
over 2 years ago – Fri, Sep 01, 2023 at 07:05:09 AM

This campaign continues to soar—thank you, backers, for your amazing support and your help spreading the word!

We’ve unlocked another stretch goal, and the Limited Deluxe Edition of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game will now get an upgrade, with roughly 8 pages of full-page art plates added to the book. Everyone getting the deluxe book—backers at the Archivist level and up—are getting a rewards upgrade as a result of this goal.

So now let’s upgrade everyone’s rewards!

Adventures in The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game are referred to as “investigations,” and every investigation is instigated by a statement. We’re already planning to include a couple of ready-to-play investigations in the corebook, but we think everyone would enjoy more. So, for our next stretch goal, let’s increase the investigations in the book, expanding the page count of both the standard and the Limited Deluxe Edition.

We’ll unlock this goal at $1,400,000. Every pledge level will benefit from this goal, so please help us shout it from the rooftops!
